Weight Class Predictions

106
Perhaps the most wide open weight class in the entire tournament. Not a whole lot of head to heads here which probably made seeding a bit tough.  Jones (LB) had some impressive wins during the season, and if you're looking for a pick outside the #1 or #2 seed in one of these weights, this may be the place to lookSmith of Keyport got the top-seed on the strength of his pin over Bisaccia (Rumson) earlier in the season, but the rest of the field in his bracket may have a bit of an edge with a little tougher schedule during the year.  Could be a wild upper half of the bracket.

Prediction: 1. Jones (LB) / 2. Vasti (CBA) / 3. Bisaccia (Rumson)

113
Top-seeded Franciosi (MS) is a returning runner-up and finished one win away from a Region medal a year ago.  The 4/5 tilt between Broderick (Raritan) and CBA's VanSickell will be important an matchup towards the team title.  Franciosi would be heavily favored against either one of them in the semis, but either one is capable of finishing in the Top 3 from that 4/5 slot.   2nd-seeded Flannigan (LB) and 3rd-seeded Poniros (OT) didn't meet in the LB/OT dual and appear to be solid picks to advance to the semis.

Prediction: 1. Franciosi (MS) / 2. Poniros (OT) / 3. Flannigan (LB)

120
Rallo (OT) is a returning champ and was a state qualifier a year ago.  He has pinned or teched the five other wrestlers he has faced in this weight and is a solid favorite to reach the final again.  There's a good chance that he'll meet up with the #2 seed, Seidenberg (Raritan), in the finals in what would be a rematch from last year's 106-semi which Rallo took, 3-2.  Seidenberg has had a very tough slate down the stretch and should be primed to make a run here.  Muolo (RBR) will try and spoil that matchup from the 3-seed.  The senior, who took 3rd in the District at 112 in 2011, very quietly had a solid year for the Bucs, compiling 27 wins.

Prediction: 1. Rallo (OT) / 2. Seidenberg (Raritan) / 3. Muolo (RBR)

126
If the seeds hold here, it would set up one of the marquee finals matchups of the day between the 2-time returning champion, and 2012 state qualifier, Beshada (CBA) and Raritan's Scarcella, who also punched a ticket to AC last season.  While Beshada will be a big favorite to get through his half of the bracket, Scarcella's road will not be easy with Iwama of Rumson in his half of the bracket at the #3 seed.  Scarcella, a 3rd-place finisher last season, is 27-1 on the year with his lone loss coming to Scarcella, 2-0, back in mid-January.  While the winner of that potential semi would get Beshada, the loser would most likely get RBR's Ruiz, a 29-win senior, who will not be an easy out here.

Prediction: 1. Beshada (CBA) / 2. Scarcella (Raritan) / 3. Iwama (Rumson)

132
Ocean's Hertling placed 3rd in AC as a frosh in 2012, and is the top-seed in a very strong weight class where all eleven wrestlers finished the regular season above the .500 mark.  Three wrestlers in the bottom bracket have all qualified for the Region Tournament previously.  2nd-seeded Bohal of Raritan won this weight last season, and has earned a District medal in each of his first three seasons.  Melon (CBA) advanced to the Regions twice while wrestling at Brick Twp, and was a D23 champ in 2010.  Rumsby (MS) placed 3rd at 106 in 2011, but did not participate in last year's tourney.  The 4th-seeded Menkin (LB) can't be overlooked in this field either and can hang with any of the above mentioned.

Prediction: 1. Hertling (OT) / 2. Bohal (Raritan) / 3. Melon (CBA)

138
After qualifying for the Regions in his freshman season, the top-seeded George (LB) missed out on return trips each of the last two seasons.  He had a big year wrestling up at 145 all season, and is the top seed in a pretty strong weight class.  Friday's 4/5 should be interesting with 4th seeded MacNeille of Ocean, a 3rd-place finisher last year, going up against Keansburg's Fontanez, who is 28-1 on the year.  2nd-seeded Masi of Raritan was a runner-up in 2011, but missed last year's tournament with an injury.  If the seeds hold, he would match up with CBA's Casselli, a champ in 2011 and runner-up last year, in the semis.

Prediction: 1. George (LB) / 2. Casselli (CBA) / 3. Masi (Raritan)

145
Rovegno caught fire towards the end of last season on his way to winning the 138-pound weight class and finishing one win shy of a Region medal in 2012.  He spent most of the year wrestling up at 52 and 60, but is back down to 45
where he gets the top-seed and should be a solid favorite to advance to his 2nd-straight final.  Best (MS) has had a strong sophomore campaign for the Eagles and picked up the 2-seed on the strength of some very impressive wins during the regular season, including a pin over Marlboro's Dan Saraiva, a returning Region 6 medalist.  He also holds an 11-4 win over his potential quarterfinal opponent, Sookdeo of Raritan.  The 3rd-seeded Balina (LB) is a 2-time medal winner and has looked very tough for the Wave since missing a short period of time with an injury.

Prediction: 1. Balina (LB) / 2. Rovegno (OT) / 3. Best (MS)

152
South's Blasco, a 2-time placer, has had a terrific senior year and has been on a real roll as of late.  He put up several impressive wins over the course of the season, but maybe none were more impressive than his handing state-ranked Jordan Pagano of South Brunswick his only loss of the year in last week's dual.  He's top seed here, and should be a safe pick to advance to the finals.  In the bottom bracket, George (LB) is a returning state qualifier and a 2-time D22 finalist.  He'll be in the hunt for his first District title, but has a tough road to get there.  In addition to Blasco in that top bracket, there is also RBC's States, a returning 3rd-place finisher, at the 3-seed.

Predicition: 1. George (LB) / 2. Blasco (MS) / 3. States (RBC)

160
Very interesting weight class with the top six seeds here all having 20+ wins.  Raritan's Sheehan earned the top-seed here, but the 4th-seeded Whitlock of RBC hung in there with him earlier this year in a 9-5 loss.  North frosh Vetrano could be a sleeper here.  He dropped a pair of sudden victory decisions to Whitlock and 3rd-seeded Prevost during the regular season, so he can't be counted out in the medal chase.  He gets the chance to avenge the Whitlock loss in Friday's 4/5 bout.  2nd-seeded Pappayliou (LB) got about as close to punching his ticket to the Regions last year as you can get, dropping a 4-OT decision to now teammate George of LB in the semis last year, and then losing by a point in the 3rd-place bout.  He'll no doubt be looking to make up for last year and should have a little extra motivation.  3rd-seeded Prevost of Keyport also just missed on a trip to Regions last year when he dropped a 2-point decision in the 3rd-place match.  He gets a tough test right out of the gate on Friday with Ocean's Lawhon.  Should be a pretty wide-open weight, but you have to give a slight edge to the trio of 4th-place finishers here that will have that extra motivation after last season's near misses.

Prediction: 1. Pappayliou (LB) / 2. Sheehan (Raritan) / 3. Prevost (Keyport)

170
After a 32-win regular season, RBR's Stambaugh enters the tourney as the top-seed.  He finished 3rd in 2011, 2nd in 2012, and will be looking to become the Bucs' 1st District champion since Lamar Brown in 2005.  While Stambaugh figures to be a solid choice to come out of the top bracket, the bottom bracket should be a pretty good battle.  Both Lynch (Raritan) and Wilton (MN) entered last season's tournament as #3 seeds in their respective weights, and both were upset on opening night by the #6 seed.  Wilton again will be have to be careful on Friday night, as he most likely will face Rios (LB) who could be a spoiler here.

Prediction: 1. Stambaugh (RBR) / 2. Lynch (Raritan) / 3. Wilton (MN)

182
The top seeded Pappayliou (LB) is the lone medal winner here, but he has a pretty interesting draw.  If the seeds hold into Saturday, Pappayliou would face #4 Jrad (MS) whom he edged 1-0 earlier in the year.  Pappayliou is the favorite, but it probably will not be easy.  In the bottom bracket, the Friday night 3/6 matchup is another interesting matchup featuring a Middletown North wrestler.  This time it's Fabiano who draws Raritan's #6 Jones.  2nd-seeded Lyster of Ocean has been on roll for the Spartans, having not lost match since January 10th.

Prediction: 1. Pappayliou (LB) / 2. Lyster (OT) / 3. Fabiano (MN)

195
CBA's Oxley's decision to go 195 makes the top 3 seeds here a brutal trio to get through.  Oxley is the top-seed and his only 3 losses on the year were a pair to Liberty's Nick Zak, and one to returning State Champ, Johnny Sebastian of Bergen Catholic.  2nd-seeded McCord of RBC has zero losses on the year. He is 29-0 and only three of his opponents have managed to go the full six minutes with him.  One of those opponents is Middletown North's Freshnock, one of the top frosh in the Shore, who lost just two matches on the year, the 6-5 loss to McCord, and a 5-2 decision to Oxley.  A trio of 20+ winners in Roselli (LB), Manoes (Keansburg) and Josh Prevost (Keyport) are also here making this one of the more solid weights in the District.

Prediction: 1. Oxley (CBA) / 2. McCord (RBC) / 3. Freshnock (MN)

220
Ocean's Bell, who spent some time at the #1 spot in the Region Rankings, is the lone returning medal winner in this weight class having placed 3rd at 182 a year ago.  Bell is the favorite, but keep an eye on the 3rd-seeded Prevost (Keyport) whose only losses in the Shore this year are to RBC's McCord, and Middletown North's Rodriguez

Prediction: 1. Bell (OT) / 2. Prevost (Keyport) / 3. Guidetti (LB)

Hwt
At one point or another this season, all three of the Top 3 seeds here have been in the Top 3 of the Region Rankings at heavyweight.  Raritan's Toal is the top-seed here and has not lost a match since December.  Two of his three losses were by one point, and his other loss was to Alex Thompson of Haddon Heights, one of the favorites to win it all in AC.  2nd-seeded Finn (MS) made a big statement early in the season when he knocked of Brick Memorial's Tyler Poling and highly regarded Tyler Gildner of Robbinsville on his way to the TCNJ Pride title.  He also took Toal to sudden victory in a 3-2 loss.  3rd-seeded Rodriguez (MN) went 29-2 on the year with his only losses coming at 220.  The heavyweight division always seems to spring some surprises throughout every Region's Districts, so don't count out the winner of Friday's 4/5 bout between Augustin (LB) and Arias (OT).

Prediction: 1. Toal (Raritan) / 2. Rodriguez (MN) / 3. Finn (MS)

Team Title
While this is the District with the most teams with a legit shot at contending for the title, I give the nod to LB with the most champs and most wrestlers through.  I think Raritan pushes 7 through, while Ocean advances 6, but Ocean outpoints them with 2 more champs for 2nd.
Prediction: 1. Long Branch / 2. Ocean / 3. Raritan / 4. CBA / 5. Middletown South
